Pre-Registration Information for Seminars and Clinics 2006-2007
Fall 2006 and Spring 2007 This is your opportunity to pre-register with preference for seminars and clinics for Fall 2006 AND Spring 2007. You will need to submit preferences online by 12:00 p.m., Mon, March 27. The following sites are available now to take your seminar and/or clinic pre-registration; however, priority is not given based on the order in which these submissions are received, except that anyone whose submission arrives after the deadline will get the least priority (even if you are a 3L).

Pre-registering does not guarantee placement. Email notices confirming placements in clinics and seminars should be sent to students by Fri, April 7. If you do not receive a confirmation email, this means that you did not receive a spot in the course(s) you desired as of that date. Your name will automatically be placed on the appropriate waitlist(s). Seminar and clinic waitlists do not appear in WebSTAC (or count toward your max # of credits when registering online). Your name will automatically be placed on the waitlist(s) for any other seminars/clinics that were higher on your preference list than the one you got into. If you get into your first seminar or clinic choice we do not add your name to any other waitlists unless you specifically instruct us to. If a spot comes open for you, the Registrar’s Office will contact you and you will have the opportunity to accept or decline the opening. The seminar and clinic waitlists are kept by hand in the Registrar’s Office. Note that some waitlists move significantly and students generally do get into courses off waitlists, although it may not happen until nearer to the drop deadlines for clinics, or the start of the semesters for seminars.
Before making your course selections, it is advised that you attend as many of the information sessions as possible (see pg. 3) and that 1Ls meet with their legal writing professors for individual advising sessions (legal writing professors will be contacting 1Ls about setting up appointments). Also, Student Services administrators (Janet Bolin and Elizabeth Patton Walsh) are available to meet with students. Submit seminar preferences on the web at /registrar/prereg/seminarpre.asp by Mon, March 27, 12:00 noon. Resumes are not considered when seminar placements are made. Third-years receive preference over second-years, except for those third-years who have already taken a seminar. Note: Students who submit only one choice of a small number of choices do not receive preference over students who indicate more choices.
The upper-level research and writing requirement:
All J.D. students must successfully complete one seminar in order to fulfill the upper-level research & writing requirement necessary to be awarded the J.D. degree. Students are encouraged to read the course descriptions carefully for seminar structure (such as whether they meet on a regular basis or not) and requirements. All seminars are 3 units. Supervised research and reviews do not fulfill the upper-level research and writing requirement.
Limitations on withdrawal from Seminars:
Students wishing to drop a Seminar after the seminar has had its first meeting, must obtain written permission from the instructor (on a Seminar Add/Drop form available from the Student Forms & Information area near the student mailboxes or from the Registrar’s Office website at /registrar/pages.aspx?id=2131). Note that it may be difficult to obtain instructor permission to withdraw from any oversubscribed Seminar after the time has passed during which the instructor will permit another student to enroll.
Pre-registration and Confirmation notices:
Students should submit seminar preferences online at /registrar/prereg/seminarpre.asp by noon on Mon, March 27. Emails confirming placement in seminars should be emailed to students by Fri, April 7. If you do not receive a confirmation email by April 7, this means that you did not receive a spot in a seminar that you requested as of that date. However, your name will automatically be placed on the waitlist for that seminar and any other seminars that were higher on your preference list than the one you got into; however, these waitlists are kept by the Registrar’s Office and will not appear in WebSTAC so that these credits will not count toward the maximum # of credits you can be enrolled in or waitlisted for. Eventually we will also inform students of their places on waitlists. If a spot comes open for you, the Registrar’s Office will notify you as soon as possible.

Every effort will be made to give you your first or alternate choice(s). If you are a third year who needs a seminar to graduate and you list only one preference and are lotteried out, you will be placed in an available seminar. Students who submit only one choice do not receive preference for that one choice over students who indicate more than one choice.
Note: Any case of providing a false answer on the preference form will be referred to the Honor Council.

Before you submit your clinic preferences, please read carefully through the course descriptions and think seriously about the clinical course that will meet your needs and interests. Keep in mind that you cannot take a Clinic (or at the least will have less priority in getting into a Clinic) unless you have satisfied the pre/co-requisites, without special permission from the professor. Also note that you cannot take two clinics during the same semester. Students who are not in good academic standing may not enroll in a clinic. Students in a clinic are strongly encouraged not to work at a job during their clinical semester.
Clinical courses are often over-subscribed. Thus, you may wish to indicate alternate choices to ensure placement in a clinic. If a particular clinic is over-subscribed with students who have met the prerequisites and demonstrated interest in their personal statement/resume, selection will be done by lottery. If a lottery is necessary, preference generally will be given to students who have not yet taken a clinic and students closest to graduation. Note, however, that the lottery rules are subject to the prerequisites and preference rules listed under specific clinic course descriptions.
The Law School guarantees that each student will have the opportunity to participate in a clinic once during their 2nd or 3rd year, subject to the following stipulations:
1) students must have planned appropriately by taking the correct pre/co-requisites,
2) students must have properly submitted their pre-registration preferences online along with their statements of interest by the lottery deadline, and
3) the clinic guarantee does not mean that a student will definitely get into his or her first choice clinic and it does not guarantee the semester in which a student will get into a clinic. Prof. Tokarz, Director of the Clinical Program, will do her best to match each student with his or her preferred choices.
To withdraw from a clinic, students should notify Colleen Erker at email@example.com. Note the special withdrawal deadlines in the clinic course descriptions. Be sure to submit your preferences and statement(s) of interest online at /registrar/prereg/clinicpre.asp by noon on Mon, March 27, to meet the lottery deadline.
Confirmation emails should be sent to students by Fri, April 7. If you do not receive a confirmation email, this means that you did not get into a clinic at that point, but your name will automatically be added to the waitlist(s) of the clinic(s) you specified. (Note: the waitlists are kept by hand in the Registrar’s Office and do not appear in WebSTAC so that they do not count toward the maximum number of credits in which you can be enrolled/waitlisted). The Registrar’s Office will notify you by email if a spot opens up for you.
Students admitted to the Civil Justice Clinic, Criminal Justice Clinic, and the Interdisciplinary Environmental Clinic are provided some opportunities to appear in court or pretrial proceedings as attorneys for their clinic clients pursuant to the Missouri Student Practice Rule, Rule 13. As a result, students applying for these clinical courses are given preference if they are eligible for student practice under Missouri Supreme Court Rule 13. (Preference to Rule 13 eligible students may also be given for the Civil Rights & Community Justice Clinic.) Students are eligible to apply for certification to practice under Rule 13 if they have successfully completed at least 42 credit hours.
If you plan on taking the Missouri Bar Exam and you have already registered as a law student with the Missouri Supreme Court (Rule 8), you simply have to provide your Missouri law student registration number on the pre-registration form and file for your Rule 13 certification ASAP (or as soon as you have earned at least 42 credit hours).
If you have not applied for Missouri Law Student Registration (Rule 8) and are selected for these Clinics, in order to retain your spot in the course, you will need to file the special Rule 13 application for students who are not already registered with the MO Supreme Court, as soon as you have earned at least 42 credit hours. (The fee for filing a Rule 13 application as a second or third year student who is not already registered as a law student with the MO Supreme Court, is currently $50.00; for those students who have registered as a student with the Missouri Supreme Court, there currently is no additional fee for the Rule 13 application.)
Students should read the pre/corequisite information for all Clinics carefully; if a student has not satisfied both pre/corequisites, he or she can attach to the pre-registration form a request to waive one of the courses. In any case, a personal statement is highly recommended.

If you are unable to contact a faculty member, please see Beth Niehaus in the Clinical Office, Room 589. Note to Class of 2007: If you applied to and are selected for the Congressional & Admin. Law Clinic (DC Clinic) you may receive less priority in getting into one of the “regular” clinics relative to others.
Withdrawal Policy for Clinics: In order to try to avoid the sort of last-minute shuffling that, in the past, has resulted in interested students being notified of clinic openings too late for them readily to change their schedules and enroll, the following policy is in effect: For most Clinics*, If you are enrolled after Mon, May 1, 2006, for Fall 2006 or Mon, Oct. 30, 2006, for Spring 2007, you will not be permitted to drop the course. In other words, any student enrolled in the course after the drop deadline date will receive a grade for the course and risk receiving a failing grade.
*Read clinic course descriptions, as some clinics have different drop deadlines (such as Govt Lawyering & Judicial Clerkship).
