Congratulations on your admission to WashU Law! The Black Law Students Association is thrilled to welcome you to the Law School (and to St. Louis if you, like many of us, are new to the city).
As you settle in your new home, we encourage you to consider joining BLSA.
For over forty years, our organization has helped make the WashU experience more enriching and fulfilling for Black law students. Through our longstanding commitment to academics, professional development, and community service, BLSA has become one of the largest and most impactful student organizations at the Law School.
For 1Ls, WashU BLSA’s impact starts early. Recognizing that 1L can be particularly daunting for Black students who are unfamiliar with the legal landscape, BLSA has designed various academic programs to make your transition to law school less stressful (and more successful). We offer formal and informal mentorship opportunities, host workshops on note taking, brief writing, and exam preparation, and provide access to outlines written by students who have excelled in the courses you are taking.
Throughout law school, BLSA also provides a comfortable forum for Black law students to voice their unique needs and concerns. Having a safe space to vent and deliberate was certainly something we valued last year in the wake of the tragic events in Ferguson.
Admittedly, as law students it can be difficult at times not to feel detached from the greater community we live in. Combatting that isolation, our organization works diligently to give students a constant stream of opportunities to connect and grow with the community outside the walls of our institution.
Please take time to further explore our website and learn more about our organization’s structure and specific initiatives. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Again, congratulations and welcome to WashU Law. We hope to see many new faces at our first general body meeting!
