Clinical Experience Guarantee & Placement Priority Rules 

Clinical Experience Guarantee 

Washington University School of Law guarantees every interested J.D. student at least one law clinic or externship/field placement experience during his or her second or third year of law school.

Placement Priority Rules 

  1. 3L students with no prior law clinic or externship/field placement experience have first priority. Although we cannot necessarily meet all student choices of law clinic or externship/field placement, our application review process seeks to accommodate those selections. The summer Judicial Clerkship, summer Lawyering Practice Externship, and Supervised Practicum do not count as a prior clinical program experience;
  2.  2L students with no prior law clinic or externship/field placement experience have second priority, once 3L students with no prior experience are placed;
  3. 3L students with a prior law clinic or externship/field placement experience who want a second experience will be placed only if there are openings after 3L and 2L students with no prior experience are placed.

* Where there are special circumstances, a student may petition the Associate Dean for Clinical Education for an exception to the priority rules.
