Emily Cohen

Lecturer in Law

Professor Emily Cohen teaches first-year courses focusing on objective and persuasive legal writing, analysis, advocacy, and practice. After graduating from WashULaw, she served as law clerk to Judge Barry S. Schermer, who sat as a United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Eastern District of Missouri and a member of the United States Bankruptcy Appellate Panel for the Eighth Circuit. Following eight years of business bankruptcy, creditors’ rights, and construction transactions private practice in St. Louis and Boston, Professor Cohen returned for fourteen years as Judge Schermer’s career law clerk. During her tenure as a law clerk, Professor Cohen enjoyed her involvement with various types of bankruptcy matters at the trial and appellate levels, such as individual consumer liquidations and reorganizations; farm and municipal bankruptcies; Chapter 11 cases of all sizes including complex mega-cases; and adversary proceedings.
