Combining a legal and a business education offers unparalleled intellectual and practical opportunities.  In the litigation space, attorneys who have a sophisticated understanding of clients’ businesses and industry practices are able to better develop a winning trial strategy and negotiate advantageous settlements.  In the transactional space, a solid grounding in law and business provides an attorney with a critical advantage in negotiating and structuring deals, including facilitating mergers and acquisitions both nationally and internationally.

Who should consider a JD/MBA?

A student who is interested in:

  • Corporate and business law, whether in litigation, transactional practice, or in general counsels’ offices
  • Assuming management roles in business, including investment or accounting firms
  • Entrepreneurship
  • High-level government positions, including in the corporate governance space, compliance arena, or financial regulatory matters
  • Corporate real estate matters

How do I apply for the program?

A separate application must be submitted to both the law school and the business school. Please indicate to both schools, at the time you apply, that you are seeking admission as a joint-degree candidate. WULaw will grant all current Washington University graduate students who wish to pursue a joint degree an application fee waiver.

How long does it take to earn a JD/MBA?

The JD/MBA takes four years to complete – one year less than if both degrees were completed separately. Students must comply with the admission requirements for both degree programs. The equivalent of five semesters (earning 77 credits) are spent at the law school and three semesters (earning 52 credits) are at the business school. Students who start in one program are welcome to apply to the other program and begin the JD/MBA in their second year of school.
