Use Up-to-Date Antivirus Software

Antivirus software helps protect your computer against viruses. Many computers come with anti-virus software installed. You can also purchase anti-virus software and install it yourself. Just having an anti-virus program installed is not enough, however. You also need to keep your anti-virus software up to date.

In this step, we will tell you how to get, install, and update anti-virus software.

Do I have Norton Antivirus software installed on my computer?

  1. Click Start, and then click Programs.
  2. Look for Norton and Symantec.
  3. If you have a previous version uninstall it. 
  4. Now go to your Control Panel.  Remove anything having to do with Norton Or Symantec (unless
  5. Now install the version given to you by the law school.  (Norton AV will not work correctly installed over top of an older version.

Installation Instructions:

  1. Install Norton Anti-Virus
  2. Click Next to continue.
  3. Read the License Agreement and select I accept the terms in the license agreement. Click Next.
  4. In the Mail Snap-In Selection window, the Microsoft Exchange/Outlook checkbox and the Lotus Notes checkbox should not be selected. Click Next.
  5. In the Destination Folder window, if you wish to choose a different installation folder, click Change. Otherwise, click Next.
  6. In the Network Setup Type window, select Unmanaged, and click Next.
  7. In the Initial Settings window, the File System Real-time Protection checkbox should be selected. Click Next.
  8. In the Run Options Window check Run Live Update and click Next (you must be connected to the internet).
  9. Click Install. You will see a progress bar showing the status of the installation.
  10. Read the Live-Update information and click Next again

Click Finish.

In the Old Virus Definition File, click Close.


Important Having two different anti-virus programs installed on one computer can cause conflicts on your computer. Always uninstall existing anti-virus software before installing Norton Antivirus

Is my anti-virus software up to date?

Installing anti-virus software will only protect you against previous security issues. To help ensure your computer is safe, you need to keep your anti-virus software up to date. Most anti-virus companies offer subscription services to ensure you get the latest updates.

To check if you have up-to-date software: Open your anti-virus program from the Start menu or the taskbar notification area and look for update status. If you still aren't sure if your anti-virus software is up to date, contact your anti-virus software provider.
