Public Interest in IP Law - Thursday, March 26, 2009 (noon in Room 310 - Bryan Cave Moot Courtroom) - Pam Samuelson of UC Berkely is visiting Wash U to speak about public interest in Intellectual Property law. The talk will likely focus on IP legal clinics. Everyone is encouraged to attend as there may be some important announcements about this school's IP center following the talk.
Access to Equal Justice - Friday, March 27, 2009 (8:30am - 4pm in Room 310 - Bryan Cave Moot Courtroom) - The ninth annual Washington University School of Law Access to Equal Justice Colloquium, sponsored by the Clinical Education Program, will provide a forum for university faculty and students, lawyers, judges, community leaders and government officials to interrogate efforts at law, court and related systems reform. A panel at this event will concentrate on IP clinic programs and nonprofit organizations' uses of IP. This event free and open to the public, but reservations are required. Townsend Writing Prize in IP Scholarship - Due March 20 Townsend and Townsend and Crew LLP is sponsoring the Townsend Prize for Intellectual Property Writing and Scholarship. All Washington University Law students are encouraged to enter. Prior coursework or experience in intellectual property law is not required. The first-place winner will receive a cash award of $1,000, and the second-place winner will receive a cash award of $250. All entries must be submitted by e-mail no later than Friday, March 20. Wednesday, February 18, 2009 - Introduction to Intellectual Property (3pm in Whitaker Hall, Room 100) Dr. Mindy Fleisher, a senior patents manager will provide an overview of the four types of intellectual property - patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets - and details what each type is used for, how they differ and how they work together in marketing strategies. The presentation will also show budding inventors how to begin protecting their intellectual property from the moment they conceive of an invention. Additionally, how the role of intellectual property in supporting the US economy will be discussed. The presentation will include time for a question and answer period.
Wednesday, February 18, 2009 - IP and Other Rights in the Contemporary Sports Industry - Join IPLS for a panel of speakers talking about the Contemporary Sports Industry in regards to IP and other rights. Ron Katz, of Manatt in California will be speaking about a very high-profile case he had against the NFL Players Association over players' rights in video games. Anastasios Kaburakis of SIU and Professor Kieff will also be on the panel talking about IP rights in Sports Law. The event will offer CLE credit. (4:00pm in the Bryan Cave Moot Courtroom) IPLS is very happy to be joining BAMSL in bringing Bob Yoches to St. Louis to present at a very important CLE event held right here at Wash U. The In re Bilski case is arguably one of the most important intellectual property cases that has been handed down this past year. Mr. Yoches and the other speakers will be discussing the decision, its impact on the legal and innovative communities, and related cases before the Federal Circuit now.

Of course, this movie is entirely fictional, but it has enough of an intellectual property slant to have you thinking about patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets inbetween lines of witty dialog and businessmen jumping out of buildings.

Senniger Powers, the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis (BAMSL) and Washington University Law School hosted a program on the recent and very important In re Seagate decision. The presenters included David Harlan and Ed Hejlek, both from Senniger Powers, J. Bennet Clark, from Bryan Cave LLP, and Brian Ferguson, who successfully argued the case at the Federal Circuit for Seagate, from McDermott Will & Emory. The event was on October 16, 2007 in the Bryan Cave Moot Courtroom. There was also a tutorial on the decision taught by Professor Kieff on October 11, and a reception following the event.
