Prof. Mandelker Publishes 4th Edition of Street Graphics Monograph
The American Planning Association has just published the fourth edition of Professor Daniel Mandelker’s coauthored monograph, Street Graphics and the Law.
The new edition of the monograph, first published in 1973, continues the innovative concepts for “on-premise” business signage that enable signs to communicate effectively in their environment. It also includes new chapters on digital signs and a new chapter on sign illumination requirements.
Mandelker revised the chapter on free speech to include discussion of the Supreme Court of the United States’ recent free speech case on sign regulation, Reed v. Town of Gilbert. It also features a primer on how to protect a sign ordinance from attack under the free speech clause of the Constitution.
Finally, Mandelker’s model ordinance, which has influenced sign ordinances around the country, has been revised to reflect new developments in free speech law and new signage requirements, such as the illumination requirement.
The book is available from the American Planning Association's web site, planning.org.
