The corporate governance failures of such companies as Enron and WorldCom led Congress to pass the Sarbanes-Oxley Act; this legislation has greatly increased expectations for financial accountability from businesses and augmented the level of public scrutiny for organizations of all types, including not-for-profit organizations.
In recent years the IRS, Congress, and other governmental authorities have significantly extended their oversight of not-for-profit organizations. In fact, Federal and State agencies have become increasingly interested in promoting financial transparency and accountability in the not-for-profit sector; so now more than ever, it is critically important for not-for-profit organizations to maintain a strong system of internal controls that promote transparency and accountability.
You will learn how to take a systematic and disciplined approach to overseeing internal control systems in your not-for-profit organization.
Additionally, you will learn helpful techniques which will assist you in maintaining your tax-exempt status.
Lastly, you will learn what books and records are absolutely essential for complying with various laws and accounting conventions which apply to not-for-profits.
