Interlibrary Loan Information
Interlibrary Loan service is available to Law faculty, staff, and students currently enrolled at Washington University. Through the automated Illiad system, books and articles not available on campus can be requested online. New users of Illiad should register before submitting a request. Once registered, users can access their accounts and track the status of requests online. For more information, see the ILLIAD Frequently Asked Questions page. Users without Internet access should use the print forms that are available at the Library circulation desk.
Non-law Washington University faculty, staff and students should use the Interlibrary Loan Department at Olin Library. Members of the Law Library Association, general public and local bar will need to use their local libraries.
An interlibrary loan request generally takes one to two weeks. Please note that if a book is not returned, the Law Library must pay the lending library for the book. This cost (plus a fee for processing) will be passed on to the borrower.
INTERLIBRARY LOAN PROCESS:
1. Check the Catalog
Search the Washington University Hilltop Campus Libraries http://catalog.wustl.edu/search~/ to see if the material is held on campus. If not held here, you might also want to search the Mobius libraries http://mobius.missouri.edu/. The Mobius catalog contains holdings from the libraries of Saint Louis University and the University of Missouri system, as well as Washington University. You may check out materials from any library in the Mobius system (including the Hilltop campus libraries).
We also offer a new service -- direct request. Direct request is available in the Washington University Catalog as well as the Mobius catalog. Direct request allows you to request that materials held by Mobius or other Hilltop campus libraries be delivered to our hold shelf. To use this service, follow these steps:
- Click on the request link.
- Provide the information requested: Name, Washington University ID number, PIN, and desired Pick-Up Location. (A list of locations is provided. Choose the one titled 'Law Library'.)
If another library (e.g., Olin) holds the material in its collection but it is checked out, it may be requested via ILL.
2. Fill out a ILL form
All interlibrary loan requets should be submitted via a web-based service called ILLIAD (referenced above) available through WorldCat. In order to use ILLIAD, you must register and establish a personal account at this URL (http://illiad.wustl.edu/illiad/wul/firsttime.html). You can also register through the WorldCat interface as described below.
- Go to WorldCat (available only on campus or through the proxy server) and execute your search.
- Identify a book in your results list that you want to request via InterLibrary Loan
- Click on the "Law School ILLIAD" link on the WorldCat screen.
- A pop-up window will appear with a link titled "First Time Users"
- Click on this link and fill in the resulting form.
For more information, see the ILLIAD Frequently Asked Questions page. You may also stop at the reference desk for assistance if you encounter problems in registering or using the ILLIAD system.
ILLIAD allow you to place, track, and keep a history of Interlibrary Loan requests from a personal online account that can be accessed anywhere. All transactions, including renewals, are done online. Articles and photocopies will be delivered directly to your ILLIAD account in Adobe PDF format.
3. Wait for Notification
It may take up to two weeks (occasionally more) to get items. You will be notified by phone, e-mail, or a note in your box when the material arrives.
4. Pick up the material
Materials will be placed on the hold shelf behind the circulation desk. If the requested material is no longer needed, please inform the Interlibrary Loan Assistant. Material that is not picked up within two weeks will be returned to the lending institution.
5. Return materials
Photocopies are yours to keep; however, other materials will have a due date. The loan period is determined by the lending library and may vary. Please return materials promptly. To renew a loan, contact the Interlibrary Loan Assistant.
