What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan is a service which locates and borrows materials that are not owned by either the Law Library or Olin Library. ILL is not intended for extensive borrowing by individuals. Please consider consulting one of the Law School’s research librarians if you find yourself making several ILL requests.

Who may use the law library’s Interlibrary Loan Service?

Only Law School faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students may use the law library's service. Other Washington University faculty, staff and students must use Olin Library’s Interlibrary Loan Department. Law Library Association members, the general public and local bar members must use their local library’s interlibrary loan service. **RAs, please contact the Access Services Librarian for special instructions regarding ILL.**

Will I be charged for using Interlibary Loan?

No. While the majority of libraries do assess a fee for interlibrary loans, we do not pass those charges on to you. To keep this service free, we do ask you to exercise discretion in regards to the number of items you request.

How do I submit an Interlibrary loan request?

Before you complete an ILL request form, search for the title of the item using the Law Library's online catalog. If you need an article but the journal is not owned by the Law Library, don’t forget to check Olin Library’s Search Resources. Olin subscribes to many journals both in print and electronic formats. Once you’ve determined the item you need is not available, you can make an interlibrary loan request through MOBIUS or ILLiad.


What is MOBIUS?

MOBIUS is a consortium of academic libraries in the state of Missouri. MOBIUS allows you, the patron, to directly request materials from other academic libraries in the state. Please note that the Washington University School of Medicine Library is not included in the MOBIUS Catalog and must be accessed separately: Medical School Library Catalog. To request items from the Med School, please use ILLiad.

When and how should I request books from MOBIUS?

Use MOBIUS only when you will not need the book for more than 3 weeks. MOBIUS requests are not administered by the Law Library and your record will be blocked and you will be billed if items are not returned on time. You may check out up to 30 books at a time.

Search the WULibraries Catalog. If the title you want is not available at Washington University, transfer your search request to the MOBIUS central catalog by clicking on the "Search MOBIUS" box. Once you have found the book, select on "Request" from the middle of the page. Choose "WashU" from the drop down cluster option menu. Input your WUSTLKey and choose "Law Library" as your "Pickup Location" from the drop down menu. Select "Submit".

How long may I keep a MOBIUS book?

The loan period for all MOBIUS materials is 3 weeks. You may renew items twice. If you do not return books promptly, you will be billed and your borrowing privileges will be blocked.

How will I know when the item I requested has arrived?

We will notify you when the item arrives. You can also use the My Catalog function to check on the status of your requests.

What if I no longer want or need items I requested?

Please inform the Circulation Manager if you no longer need an item. Materials not picked up within two weeks will be returned to the lending institution.


What is ILLiad?

ILLiad is the electronic system you use to request an item through Interlibrary Loan. Unlike MOBIUS, ILLiad has access to thousands of libraries and resources world-wide.

How do I submit an ILLiad request?

To create an ILLiad account for the first time, register here. You may also create an account by first locating the book you need in WorldCat.

1) click on the "Law School ILLIAD" link;
2) click on the pop-up window with link titled "First Time Users";
3) fill in the resulting form.

If you already have an ILLiad account, access it and track your requests here. After logging into ILLiad look for the "New Request" section in the left-hand navigation. Click the appropriate request type, and fill out as much identifying information as possible. Submitting more information helps to guarantee you get the right material. Click "Submit Request".

How do I check the status of my ILLiad request?

Log into your ILLiad account. There you can monitor the status of your requests, receive articles, and manage your account.

How long does it take for ILL materials to arrive?

It may take up to two weeks (occasionally more) to get items. You will be notified by e-mail when the material arrives. Materials will be placed on the hold shelf behind the circulation desk. Articles will be delivered to your ILLiad web account. If the requested material is no longer needed, please inform the Interlibrary Loan Assistant. Material that is not picked up within two weeks will be returned to the lending institution.

How long may I keep ILLiad items?

Photocopies are yours to keep; however, other materials will have a due date. The loan period is determined by the lending library and may vary. If you need to renew a loan, contact the Interlibrary Loan Assistant. Please return due materials promptly: Interlibrary loan is a courtesy and we cannot jeopardize our relations with other libraries by failing to conform to the conditions imposed by the lending library. Your cooperation is appreciated. Failure to return materials may result in revocation of your borrowing privileges and in billing for the materials.
