2008 Jessup International Team Advances to the International Rounds

For the sixth time in ten years, WU Law’s team advanced to the International Rounds of the Jessup Competition, having prevailed in the Midwest Super-Regional over 23 other teams from throughout the region.  The Jessup is truly the “world cup” of international moot court competitions: Ninety-seven National and Regional champions – from over seventy countries – competed in this year’s International Rounds, drawn from over 500 teams from around the world.  The Washington University team narrowly missed advancing to the single-elimination “advanced rounds,” missing by only a single point (out of 900 points in a match).  This is, by Jessup standards, a razor-thin margin.  The team scored 3062 points in the Competition (out of a possible 3600) – 3000 points is considered the “gold standard” among competitive teams.

Congratulations to the entire team.  3L Ashley Walker took 9th place out of over 300 oralists at the International Rounds, with an astonishing average score of 92.2 (out of 100).  All five oralists performed extremely well, and Washington University was one of very few oralists to place all three of our “qualifying” oralists (that is, oralists who argued more than twice) in the Top 100 oralists in the Competition.  The team was composed of Walker, 3L Rebecca Feldmann, and 2Ls Shibani Shah, Erin Griebel, and Jessica Cusick (who also took 1st place individual honors at the Midwest Super-Regional).  The team was led by long-time coach Gilbert Sison, adjunct professor of law and an associate at the St. Louis firm of Rosenblum Schwartz Rogers & Glass, P.C. Professor Leila Nadya Sadat serves as Faculty Advisor.
