Major Law School Conferences Focused on Issues Back in the News

Two major law school conferences focused on issues that are back in the news. The issue of art restitution was featured in a New York Times story over a German and Egyptian governmental dispute related to the bust of Queen Nefertiti. Interestingly, the law school’s Harris Institute held a conference on Imperialism, Art and Restitution in 2004 that featured a panel on this very topic. Visit the Web site for more information and to view the panel. Similarly, the Associated Press recently reported that Elinor Ostrom will receive a Nobel Prize in Economics. Ostrom was a key participant in the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies’ first program, which was on Norms and the Law, in 2001. View the conference Web site to access the videos. She also participated in a related readings course for Washington University Law students, and a few years later, returned for the Future of the Social Sciences Conference and Workshop.

Washington University Law's Whitney R. Harris World Law Institute has launched a two-year project to study the international law regarding crimes against humanity and to draft a multilateral treaty condemning and prohibiting such crimes. This endeavor is made possible by a generous grant from Steven Cash Nickerson and the United States Institute of Peace.  In conjunction with this “Crimes Against Humanity Initiative,” five Fellows have been appointed who will be performing valuable research on the commission of atrocities from 1900-2009 and working on both the draft convention and the book during the documentation process.
