Professor of Practice Bill Dorothy has extensive experience as a trial lawyer and litigator and is an expert in legal ethics and professional practice. He recently served as a Special Pretrial Master for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois to address two attorneys’ highly contentious series of discovery disputes. In addition to his teaching, he co-advises the Wiley Rutledge Moot Court Team and established an introductory program in ethics for incoming law students during Orientation. He also has served as chairperson for Washington University’s Judicial Board. Before joining the faculty, he practiced law in Missouri and Illinois as a senior trial counsel for The St. Paul Companies, a partner with Wirth & Dorothy, and an associate with Thompson & Mitchell (now Thompson Coburn LLP), focusing on product liability, white collar crime, and complex commercial litigation. In addition to trying a variety of cases to verdict, Professor Dorothy acted as lead defendant discovery counsel for a series of multidistrict litigation cases and was on the defense team for several national class action lawsuits.
