She was recognized for being a volunteer lawyer at Legal Services of Eastern Missouri (LSEM) and for her role as co-founder of the Guardianship and Older Adult Life Planning Project, a new project offered by LSEM in conjunction with Washington University School of Law. Hideo Akiba (LLM-U.S. Law ’03) helped Lee to publish the book in Japan, and Katsumi Shirai (LLM-U.S. Law ’03), a partner at TMI Associates, edited the Japanese edition together with his 27 novice lawyers.

Class Note: Katsumi Shirai (LLM-U.S. Law) is a partner at TMI Associates in Japan, where he leads the firm’s United States and German-speaking-country practice. He says his LLM in U.S. Law prepared him for the new challenges of his current career as a litigator and business law professional in Japan. As a clerk for the Hon. Gerald B. Cohn of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois, he got his first impression of what his experience with the United States’ jury system would mean for his career. At that time, Japan was trying to introduce a jury system for criminal procedure. Shirai’s unique experience in U.S. jury trial procedure made him attractive to the Japan Bar Association, which offered him a key position on the judicial committee for the preparation of Japan’s jury system. He is still a member of the judicial committee and has been monitoring and supervising the Japanese jury system in the criminal cases. His book regarding conflict of laws issues in international sales law was recently published, and he contributed a chapter to the book, Implementing International Economic Law. Caliskan is a member of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), a forum for conciliation and arbitration of international investment disputes. He is also one of four members of the panel of conciliators and arbitrators designated by Republic of Turkey, making him eligible to be elected for the ICSID arbitral tribunals to resolve ICSID arbitration cases. Class Note: Mansour Jafarian (LLM-U.S. Law ’02, JD ’04) ) is a legal officer and legal advisor in the United Nations’ Department of Peace Keeping Operation (DPKO). DPKO helps countries torn by conflict to create conditions for lasting peace. He served in Afghanistan from 2006 to 2011 and then in Kosovo, part of the former Yugoslavia. He also works cooperatively with the Max Planck Institute, United Nations, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan to conduct workshops on public international law, the law of treaties, and international economic law for diplomats and legal officers in different parts of the public sector in Afghanistan.
