Dear Alumni and Friends:

I write to tell you that we had a good ending to our academic year, much of it captured in this slideshow. We had humid, yet festive, conditions for our Commencement Celebrations on Friday, May 17, and were thankful that when the heavy rain hit, we were under our large white tent on Mudd Field. Our celebration began with our class photo and attendance at the main Washington University ceremony, where Cory A. Booker, the mayor of Newark, N.J. and one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people in the world, delivered the 2013 Commencement address. We then processed as a group from the sidewalks in front of Anheuser-Busch and Seigle Halls to our tent, where we hold our outdoor ceremony each year.

At our Law School Ceremony, we listened to an inspirational Welcome to the Legal Profession by alumnus and National Council member Gregory A. Hewett, JD '94 and a rousing speech by Zachary Greenberg, juris doctoris candidate, who served as the Voice of the Class. We also recognized graduates who received awards in honor of their scholastic and civic achievements, having earlier celebrated with academic achievement winners at our Academic Excellence Reception. And, of course, we awarded diplomas to our graduating students, including the 280 JDs, 81 LLMs, one JSD and one MJS who made up the May 2013 list of graduates.

We were particularly pleased to celebrate with members of our 50th Reunion Class who assumed a place of honor on stage, with Professor Michael Greenfield who received our Alumni Distinguished Teaching Award, and with our Class Gift Committee. Many thanks to those members of the Class of 2013 who have made gifts and pledges. Also during our two days of Commencement activities, we recognized our Public Service Honorees, including Kailey Burger who was named our Public Service Student of the Year, and celebrated with our LLM students, representing 53 LLM in U.S. Law, 20 LLM in Taxation, and eight LLM in Intellectual Property/Technology Law graduates.

I hope you will join me in congratulating the members of the Class of 2013 and welcoming them to the Law School’s alumni community.

Best Wishes,

Kent D Syverud
Dean and Ethan A.H. Shepley Distinguished University Professor
