Memorial Tribute: Thomas R. Green

Distinguished Law Alumnus and Member of the Law School National Council

Thomas R. Green, JD ’58, a longtime supporter of WashULaw, passed away on March 27, 2017. He was 83.

A member of the Law School National Council, Green often credited his legal education for his professional success and was a firm believer in giving back to his beloved alma mater. He was a recipient of WashULaw’s Dean’s Medal, the Law School’s Distinguished Alumni Award, and Washington University’s Founders Day Distinguished Alumni Award.

Green served a number of important leadership roles on behalf of the school, including on the executive committee for the Building for a New Century Campaign, as chair of the Kresge Challenge for Anheuser-Busch Hall, and as co-chair of the Law School’s fund-raising effort for Seigle Hall. He and his wife, Karole, established the chaired professorship currently held by Professor Neil Richards and an endowed scholarship for students.

“Tom Green was a much-beloved and distinguished member of our Law School community, inspiring others and enhancing our school’s progress in so many ways,” said Dean Nancy Staudt, the Howard and Caroline Cayne Professor of Law. “He and Karole are treasured members of our WashULaw family, and his inspired leadership and friendship will be truly missed.”

Green’s varied and successful career began as an Assistant County Counselor for St. Louis County. He later became an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Missouri, a real estate developer, and a businessman in St. Louis. He founded the National Real Estate Management Company, National States Insurance Company, and Royal Banks of Missouri.

Green held leadership roles in numerous community, civic, and religious organizations, including the Jewish Federation of St. Louis, the United Jewish Appeal, the United Israel Appeal, the Jerusalem Foundation, and the Jewish Agency. Additionally, he chaired the committee to build the Holocaust Museum of St. Louis and served as the museum’s first chairman.

A funeral service was held on Thursday, March 30 at Temple Israel in Creve Coeur.
