It is with great pride and sorrow that the members of the Black History Month Programming Committee of the St. Louis Public Library dedicate this publication to te memory of author Alex Haley.

Mr. Haley was scheduled to appear as the featured speaker in the Library's celebration of Black History Month on February 16, 1992. His death deprived the world of a gifted writer whose work transcended barriers and united the world in understanding the innate nobility of mankind.

The African American Heritage of St. Louis: A Guide is a listing of sites and institutions within the St. Louis metropolitan area that are of significance to African Americans. This publication was inspired by Alex Haley's promotion of awareness of our historical heritage and was to have its initial distribution on the day of his presentation.

Mr. Haley's topic for that day was to have been "Find the Good and Praise It." We hope that our efforts emulate the standard of excellence that Alex Haley brought to his own life and writings.
