Summer courses are open to all matriculated Washington University law students and non-Washington University law students currently in good standing at an ABA accredited law school.  With the permission of the professor and law school registrar, School of Law classes are open to upper-level undergraduate students or graduate students; however, credits earned by non-law students cannot be applied toward a Washington University law degree.

Law students may take a maximum of 7 credit hours in the summer session and earn up to one-third of a semester of residency credit. In addition to 3-credit hour classes, judicial clerkship externships and lawyering practice externships may be offered for 4 units with special permission.  Summer courses generally run five weeks and begin the Monday after Commencement. Students enrolled in judicial clerkship externships and lawyering practice externships are encouraged to work in their placements over a period of at least ten weeks, and may begin their placements prior to the official start of summer school courses, if arrangements can be made with the placement site.  Specific information about current summer offerings typically is available at this Web site in mid-January.

The law school also offers the Summer Institute for Global Justice, based at Utrecht University in The Netherlands.
