Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission into any of the programs below:

Interested candidates must submit an application, 2 recommendation letters, application fee and official law school transcript with class rank.  Need based and credit based loans, as well as a limited number of merit based scholarships, are available for full time students who meet the federal requirements.  Students for whom English is not a native language are also required to have a TOEFL score of 600 (paper-based test), 250 (computer-based test), or 100 (internet-based test).

Please Note:
Your application is not complete until you submit the following:

  1. Your academic transcripts in English
  2. Two recommendation letters
  3. Your TOEFL score if you are an International student

We welcome application materials filed through LSAC.  We cannot review your file until it is complete.All materials must be submitted by May 15 of the year in which you seek to be admitted.

How to Apply:

For admission to the Master of Juridical Studies :

  • If an MJS student wished to pursue their JD degree, they must follow the same application process as JD applications, including taking the LSAT exam. Any credit earned toward the MJS is not transferable to the JD program.

For admission to the LL.M. Program in U.S. Law for International Students:

  • You must have the basic law degree from your own country, and applicants with two or more years of work experience are preferred.
  • You must possess a thorough knowledge of the English language. If English is not your native language, you must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) administered by The Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey. A TOEFL score of 600 or above is required for admission. (The TOEFL code for Washington University School of Law is 6929-03.)
  • You must have two letters of recommendation and complete two brief essays as part of the application.
  • You must have sufficient financial support for the program of study as evidenced by a letter of credit from a bank or lending institution. Enclosed materials detail the estimated cost of education — including tuition, books and supplies, room, board, personal expenses, and health insurance for the current academic year. You are required to purchase health insurance.

For admission to the LL.M. Program in Intellectual Property & Technology Law:

Students must either have graduated from an accredited U.S. law school or have an undergraduate law degree or its equivalent from a foreign institution of higher education.  Students holding an LL.B. from a non-U.S. law school are required to take a two-semester course: Introduction to U.S. Law and Legal Methods.

For admission to the LL.M. Program in Taxation:

Candidates for the LL.M. degree must have graduated from an accredited U.S. law school. In some situations, the Tax LL.M. Admissions Committee may consider students who have an undergraduate law degree or its equivalent from a foreign institution of higher learning. The Admissions Committee considers the strength of candidates' previous law school record and the candidates' tax course work in particular. For lawyers in practice, the Admissions Committee also considers work experience.  Students holding an LL.B. from a non-U.S. law school are required to take a two-semester course: Introduction to U.S. Law and Legal Methods.
