Profile

Professor of Practice Ann Davis Shields specializes in legal writing, analysis, and practice; negotiation and mediation; pretrial practice; appellate advocacy; and civil rights and employment law. She regularly presents on issues related to legal writing, analysis, and practice skills at national conferences. In addition to her teaching, she is the Director of the Pretrial Practice & Settlement Program and faculty advisor for the Negotiation Competition.

Professor Shields has served as the law school’s ombudsperson since 2005. Professor Shields is a certified Neutral for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. A member of the Missouri Bar, Professor Shields maintains a small private practice as a mediator specializing in employment and civil rights cases.

Professor Shields is the recipient of several professional awards, including Missouri Lawyers Weekly’s Women’s Justice Award for Legal Scholars and Washington University Law’s International Women’s Day Award. Before joining the law school in 1998, she practiced law with Bryan Cave’s employment and labor law department.
