Profile

Professor A. Peter Mutharika was installed as the Charles Nagel Professor of International & Comparative Law on September 14, 2009.  He has been serving as Malawi’s Chief Advisor to the President on Constitutional, Legal, and International Affairs.  In May 2009, Mutharika’s efforts contributed to the successful election of his brother, Bingu wa Mutharika, to a second term as Malawi’s President.  Mutharika also has been serving as the advisor to the American Bar Association’s Rule of Law initiative for Africa, and he is chairing the Institute for Democracy and Policy Studies, a newly established think tank designed to enhance Malawi’s democracy and state capacity.  Additionally, he continues his work as a member of the Panel of Arbitrators and Panel of Conciliators for the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes.  His book, Foreign Investment Security in Sub-Saharan Africa:  The Emerging Policy and Legal Frameworks, is scheduled to be published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers (Leiden, Netherlands).  He is a recipient of the 2008 International Jurist Award.  Together with the Chief Justice of Canada, the Minister of Justice of Japan, and the Law Society of England and Wales, the award was presented to him by the Prime Minister of India in New Delhi on December 13, 2008.  In May 2009 he was elected to the Malawi Parliament and was subsequently appointed to the Malawi Cabinet as Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.

His recent writings include:
