First Class Assignments

For the first class meeting, from 3-5 PM on January 9, please purchase Volume I of the photocopied course materials, which will be available for purchase as of January 4 in Room 301, and read the assignment for Week 1.

In case you cannot purchase these materials in time to read the entire assignment, the assignment is comprised of one of my articles and an international IP treaty, both of which are available online.

The article is McManis, "Taking TRIPS on the Information Superhighway: International IP Protection and Emerging Computer Technology", 41 Villanova Law Review 207 (1996), (available on the 5th floor of the Law Library,) and the international agreement is the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, better known as the TRIPS Agreement, which can be accessed on the website of the World Trade Organization, www.wto.org.

During the first class meeting, I will introduce you to the TRIPS Agreement and to international IP law generally. The article will provide you with a point of entry into the intricacies of the TRIPS Agreement and will set the stage for the first topic of the seminar: IP and International Trade.
